As you may have figured out, my name is Matt Griswold. This is where I think aloud, tag the trappings of the interwebs, and rant about all things interesting and ridiculous. You can reach me at mgriswold[at]gmail.com
Short films are tough - given this short story lives only 45 seconds, I think director Chris Milk achieved an awesome feat. Considering the self-imposed limitation, I find most telling the select moments he chooses to reward. (via @rafaeldante)
A great compendium of oft-cited movie poster clichés -- proving once and for all that imitation isn't just the sincerest form of flattery, it's also the safest way to say "yeah, we're just like that other thing you loved."
What if there were a way to quantify the pure cinematic DNA of any film--using signals such as shot length, amount of camera movement, color palette, and more--and distill it all into a visual "fingerprint" that can be taken in at a glance, and compared instantly with any other film? Well, a student designer named Frederic Brodbeck went and did exactly that.
Replace the moose and bear with a donkey and elephant and you'd have a perfect metaphor for American politics today. I'm sure Ting Tey didn't have that in mind when he made this awesome animated short; but it fits.
Critics: the quants are taking over! While Hollywood gained some PR points this past summer for the occasional original, there were (and will continue to be unless the market dictates otherwise), a sea of sequels and remakes flooding theaters once again. Check out the full size chart and judge for yourself!
As today's fortune would have it, I've stumbled upon the most wonderful Letters of Note, which holds in its collection a variety of hilarious, poignant, and otherwise not-intended-to-be-published-online memorandum. Above, a correspondence to the censor rating "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".
This is the next best answer to the Morgan Library (still my favorite museum in NY)
Presumably (read: "unmistakably") inspired by that awesome 35 Movies in 2 Minutes video that made the rounds a couple months back, The Guardian kicks off "Film Season" with a new challenge for your inner film nerd: 26 Movies. 85 seconds. Go!
