Star Wars Typography

“May the force of Typography be with you”

Very nicely done by Milan-based typography agency, H-57 Creative Station -- not only did the catch the manic eye of the Internet for a brief moment by playing upon its love affair with all things Obi-Wan; but they also kept the integrity of their aim intact while doing it: if you're looking for a creative typography agency, why wouldn't you call them up?

Minimalist TV Posters

There’s something to love in the simplicity of these designs – no glamour shots, no BS critical ravings, no tune in information, no cross-promotion, no ratings… one-hundred-percent concept.  In many ways, they remind me of the posters Hollywood used to put out within the old studio system. Pavegen Systems: Foot Power

Media_httpwwwpavegens_befgx

Another hypothetical sustainability concept that's being tested in London and aims to create energy from foot traffic (conversion of kinetic energy when stepped upon). How to transmit, store and utilize this energy without reworking the entire grid of a city is another matter... I'm still impressed by the simplicity of its thought and design.

Car/Wind-Powered Street Lamps

Media_httpceamblastco_kxiwj

I love the simple brilliance in this industrial design concept from mBLAST, which aims to use the wind of the cars whizzing by to power a generator for each streetlamp. The only problem (thinking about LA): high traffic will render them useless outside of the late night hours, in which there's less cars to generate the power anyway.

Tesler's Law of Conservation of Complexity

I’m not quite sure how I came to cross paths with the thoughts of Larry Tesler lately, except to say that in the cacaphony of our wired lives, the Spartan designer deserves to be heard, understood and followed.  I especially like the economic parallel which hides beneath it - how we trade, value, exchange and often disregard the scarcest resource (and currency) of all: time.

Tesler’s Law of Conservation of Complexity states that:

Every application must have an inherent amount of irreducible complexity. The only question is who will have to deal with it.

In an interview, Tesler further enumerates on his law:

If a million users each waste a minute a day dealing with complexity that an engineer could have eliminated in a week by making the software a little more complex, you are penalizing the user to make the engineer’s job easier.

Whose time is more important to the success of your business? For mass market software, unless you have a sustainable monopoly position, the customer’s time has to be more important to you than your own.

Whether you fancy yourself as a experience designer, an insurance salesman, a roadie, an entrepreneur, or just an everyday human trying not to suck: there is a priceless lesson here for life and business.
